OL2000: Windows 98 Fax Setup Fails to Add Request a Fax Shortcut

SYMPTOMS

After installing Outlook on a computer running Microsoft Windows 98, you decide to install and configure Microsoft Fax. After running Awfax.exe from the Windows 98 compact disc, you find that the Request a Fax shortcut was not added to the items on the Start menu.


RESOLUTION

Manually create the shortcut and add it the Start menu.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

To add the Shortcut to the Start menu, follow these steps:

  1. On the Start menu, point to Find and then click Files or Folders.


  2. In the Named box type Awsnto32.exe. Ensure that My Computer is selected in the Look In list. Click Find Now.


  3. Right-click the located file and then click Create Shortcut. You will receive the following shortcut prompt:


  4. Windows cannot create a shortcut here.
    Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?
  5. Click Yes.


  6. Right-click the Start button and then click Explore. Beginning with the Start menu folder in the right pane, double-click to open the following folders in order: Start, Programs, Accessories, Fax. The path displayed in the Address box should now read:


  7. C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Fax.
    Drag the shortcut created in Step 3 to the pane with the Compose New Fax and Cover Page Editor shortcuts.

    NOTE: For clarification, you may wish to rename the shortcut. To accomplish this, right-click the icon and then click Rename. Edit the text of the shortcut to read "Request a Fax."
