OL2000: How To Enforce and Preserve Outbound Message Encoding

SUMMARY

This article describes how to apply specific outbound encoding so that these settings do not have to be manually reset. The information in this article applies to the following scenario:

User A receives a message in a different encoding format than his default. He wishes to forward this message to User B, adding comments in their common language. The original message is not encoded in User A and B's default language codepage.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To Add a Registry Value

To enforce the outbound encoding of each forwarded and replied to message, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and click Run.


  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.


  3. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry key:


  4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Options\MSHTML\International
  5. On the Edit menu, click New, and then click DWORD Value.


  6. Type the following name for the new value exactly as it appears and without spaces:


  7. EnforceDefault_CodePageOut
  8. Double-click the new value, and in the Value data box, type 1. Click OK.


  9. On the Registry menu, click Exit.

To Set the Default Outbound Message Encoding

To set the default outbound encoding, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.


  2. Click International Options, and then in Use this encoding for outgoing messages list, click to select your encoding choice. Click OK and OK again to save the change.


  3. Open a new message, or reply to a received message. On the Format menu, click Encoding. The enforced encoding should have a check mark next to its entry on the list.
