OL2000: MAPI Error Importing a Personal Address Book (PAB)

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

You may receive the following error message when you attempt to import a Personal Address Book into your Outlook profile:

An error occurred while importing or exporting and the import/export was terminated. MAPI error 0X80004005 was reported. Please try to import/export again later.


CAUSE

The storage medium that the Personal Address Book is located on is write-protected. This can occur if the Personal Address Book is stored on a compact disc or a write-protected disk. The import process must write to the location where the Personal Address Book file resides for the import to succeed.


RESOLUTION

Move the Personal Address Book to your hard disk and attempt to import again.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
