OL2000: (CW) Sending Pasted Bitmap from Word Behaves Differently

ID: Q218362

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000
  • Microsoft Word 2000

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

If you use Outlook 97 or Outlook 98 and and receive messages from a person using Microsoft Office 2000, your messages may not display bitmaps correctly.

  • If you receive the message using Outlook 97, the bitmap does not appear in the body and is not attached.

  • If you receive the message using Outlook 98 (CW), the bitmap appears correctly in the message body and the message contains an attachment named Oledata.mso.

RESOLUTION

You can avoid this behavior for Outlook 98 recipients only, by using the Paste Special command in Word instead of Paste, and then choosing Device Independent Bitmap as the format. This resolution does not work if the recipient is using Outlook 97. For a resolution that works with all versions of Outlook, use Rich Text format and Outlook as the e-mail editor instead of Word.

To avoid inconsistent behavior you can use Outlook 2000 as the e-mail editor and send the message using Rich Text format. You can do this by specifying the format for each message as you create it, or by changing the message format default for all new messages.

Specify the Format for Each Message

On the Actions menu, point to New Mail Message Using, and then click Microsoft Outlook Rich Text.

Change the Default Message Format

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.

  2. On the Format tab, under Send in this message format, click Microsoft Outlook Rich Text.

  3. Click OK.

  4. Create a new mail message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem may occur under the following circumstances:

The message is created from Word 2000 by clicking the E-mail button on the toolbar. A bitmap is pasted into the body of the message and the message is sent to someone who is using Outlook 97 or Outlook 98.
