OL2000: (IMO) Sending Dialog Flashes but Does not Dial when Sending Fax

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Internet Mail Only option. To determine your installation type, on the Help menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Internet Mail Only" if you have the Internet Mail Only option installed.

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to send a fax using the Symantec Fax Starter Edition installed with Outlook in the Internet Mail Only (IMO) mode, you may see a Sending dialog box flash momentarily, but the modem does not dial and the fax is not sent.


CAUSE

You are running Outlook with Windows 98, and you used the fax options in Outlook to increased the modem initialization speed beyond the 38400 bps default.


RESOLUTION

Reset the modem initialization speed back to 38400 bps.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.


MORE INFORMATION

If you wish to increase your modem initialization speed for purposes other than sending faxes, use the the Modems applet in the Control Panel.

To reset the modem initialization speed, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.


  2. On the Fax tab, click Modem.


  3. Click to select your modem and click Properties.


  4. Click to select 38400 in the Communications port, initialize at list, and then click Apply, OK, OK, and Close.


NOTE: Setting the modem initialization speed using the procedure above does not affect the modem initialization speed set by using the Modems applet in the Control Panel.
