OL2000: Outlook Core Files Do Not Repair on Demand

SYMPTOMS

If you delete any of the Outlook core files, such as Outlook.exe, Outllib.dll, or Contab32.dll, and then start Outlook from the Desktop or a shortcut that you created, the on-demand repair feature does not work.

CAUSE

The on-demand repair of missing or damaged files only works if you start Outlook from the Program menu command that is created by installing Outlook. The Program menu command is a special type of shortcut that can only be created by the installation program.

RESOLUTION

If you suspect Outlook will not start due to a damaged or missing file, attempt to start Outlook by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, and then clicking Microsoft Outlook. If you have not modified the original installed menu command, Outlook should attempt to repair the problem files.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
