NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation. SYMPTOMSIf you click Send/Receive from an Outlook (CW) Internet E-mail POP3 account, using Microsoft Windows NT Password Authentication, you can send but not receive mail. CAUSEYou will not receive a warning message regarding this problem if the following conditions are true:
RESOLUTIONFor the POP3 account to work properly, you must log on with a valid Windows NT account that matches your POP3 account user name. The Exchange Server administrator can turn off the Windows NT Challenge and Response authentication for the POP3 protocol to resolve this problem also. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATIONThe POP3 server setting for "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" is independent of the SMTP (outgoing mail server) authentication settings. If the outgoing mail server is set for "My server requires authentication" and "Log on using Secure Password Authentication", you must have a valid Windows NT log on under the user name, or you will be prompted for your user name and password prior to connecting to the server. With the incoming mail server, you are not prompted, and you do not receive any mail. Additional query words: OL2K
