OL2000: Rich Text Numbering Not Retained in Forwarded Message

ID: Q222255

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

If you use Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor to create and send a mail message containing multi-level numbering, and the message subsequently is forwarded from one recipient to another, the numbering may not appear correctly in the Outlook preview pane, or when viewed without using Word as your e-mail editor.

CAUSE

The numbered items have at least one addtional carriage return representing blank lines between them.

RESOLUTION

Format the numbered items without pressing the ENTER key to create an extra space between lines.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When a message formatted in any Outlook editor is viewed through the preview pane, the view is displayed using the Rich Text editor. When blank lines are encountered between the sequentially numbered lines, the preview pane interprets this as a signal to restart the numbering.

For example, if your numbering was:

NOTE: <CR> represents a carriage return in this example.

1. First item

<CR>

a. First subitem
b. Second subitem
2. Second item

<CR>
a. Second subitem
b. Second subitem

The numbering might appear in the preview pane as:

1. First item

<CR>
a. First subitem
b. Second subitem
1. Second item

<CR>
a. Second subitem
b. Second subitem
The list numbering is not consecutive as a result of the carriage return.
