OL2000: (IMO) Error Message "Please Enter Your Account Name for Logging Onto This Account"

ID: Q222281

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Internet Mail Only option. To determine your installation type, on the Help menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Internet Mail Only" if you have the Internet Mail Only option installed.

SYMPTOMS

After you click OK on the Servers tab of the Symantec Fax Starter Edition (SFSE) account properties, you get the following error message:

Please enter your account name for logging on to this account.

CAUSE

You have selected the option to force Outlook to ask for a name and password to log on to the account, using Log on using Secure Password Authentication.

RESOLUTION

Remove the SFSE account from the account manager and restart Outlook:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.

  2. Click to select the Symantec WinFax Starter Edition account, and then click Remove.

  3. Click Close.

  4. Quit and restart Outlook.

The account will automatically be recreated with the correct information.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

SFSE does not require secure password authentication. There is no way for fax systems to send authentication information to validate a fax account. When you select the option to Log on using Secure Password Authentication, Outlook clears the account name box for the user to enter the information manually.

When you set up SFSE, a special account is set up with a unique account name. If you open the account manager for SFSE and click OK on the Servers tab while the account name box is empty, you will receive the above error message. While you can simply enter the account name (if you know it), it is preferable to remove the SFSE account and restart Outlook. This will recreate the SFSE account with the correct settings automatically. There is no need to reinstall SFSE from the CD or the Web after the account has been recreated.
