OL2000: (CW) Mail Is Sent to a Deleted E-mail Address

ID: Q222332

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

If you address e-mail to a contact by typing the contact's name on the To line, it may go to an old e-mail address that has been deleted from the contact's record.

RESOLUTION

After typing the contact's name on the To line, right-click the name and click to select the proper e-mail name from the Check Names dialog box before sending the mail. From then on, the correct name will automatically be resolved when the contact name is typed on the To line.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Create and save a test contact with two different e-mail addresses in the E-mail and E-mail 2 fields. Neither of the e-mail addresses should be in the Global Address List (GAL) or your Personal Address Book (PAB).

  2. Create a new e-mail message and type the test contact's name on the To line. Notice that the name will resolve with a wavy red line under it.

  3. right-click the name on the To line, click to select the E-mail address not the E-mail 2 address, and send the item.

  4. Open the test contact and delete E-mail (not E-mail 2), and then click Save and Close.

  5. Create another e-mail message and type the test contact's name on the To line. Notice that the name will resolve with a dashed green line under it.

RESULTS
If you send the message at this point, it will be delivered to the old E-mail address that was deleted from the contact record. However, if you right-click the name and click to select the E-mail 2 name from the Check Names dialog box, it will be delivered correctly and will also resolve correctly the next time it is used.

NOTE: This problem only occurs if you delete the e-mail name. If you modify it, it will work properly.
