OL2000: Error Message: "The specified protocol is unknown." When You Click a Folder in Outlook Today

SYMPTOMS

When you are in the Outlook Today folder and you click a folder to open it, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site
outlook:\\Mailbox-<mailboxname>\<foldername>.
The specified protocol is unknown.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when the folder name contains any of the following characters:

<, >, /, or \


RESOLUTION

If you include a folder link on the Outlook Today page, avoid using these characters in the folder name.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
