OL2000: Error Message "Unable to load <filename>. You may be out of memory, out of system resources, or missing a .dll file."

ERROR MESSAGE

When I attempt to start Outlook or send a new message, I get the following message:
Unable to load <file name>. You may be out of memory, out of system resources, or missing a .dll file.

CAUSES

NOTE: The value of <file name> in the error message above may help in determining which of the following causes applies to your situation.

You have added a new profile for Lotus cc:Mail support and some required files are missing.

You have attempted to switch Outlook from Corporate or Workgroup to Internet Mail Only mode and may have a missing or damaged Mapi32.dll.

You may have either a missing or damaged Extension Configuration File (.ecf), or incorrect information in the Extend.dat file.

You may have a missing or damaged Riched20.dll file.

The file, Nxpext32.dll is missing from your computer, or you removed Netscape Navigator but did not remove the reference to it in the Outlook Add-in Manager.

You installed Crystal Reports for Microsoft Outlook but the path to the Crext32.dll file is incorrect in the Crext.ecf file.

WHAT TO TRY

Missing cc:Mail files.

You should obtain and install the most recent 32-bit VIM libraries from Lotus. These file are available for download at the Lotus Support Web site. In addition, the Export.exe, Import.exe, and Ie.ri files should be copied to the System folder, if you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or 98, or to the System32 folder, if you are using Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. These files are normally stored in the Ccadmin folder on the cc:Mail post office server.

Missing or Damaged Mapi32.dll File.

On the Help menu, click Detect and Repair. This will repair any damaged files. Then proceed with switching from Corporate or Workgroup to Internet Mail Only mode.

Missing or Damaged Extension Configuration File.

To correct this problem you may have to replace the damaged extensions, or you may have to remove the reference to them in the Windows Registry. If the problem persists, you should rename and recreate the Extend.dat file, which is a binary cache of extension settings.

Missing or Damaged Riched20.dll File.

Rename the Riched20.dll file and repair Outlook by following these steps:

Rename Riched20.dll

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and click Files Or Folders. In the Named box, type Riched20.dll and click Find Now.


  2. In the Search Results list, right-click Riched20.dll and then click Rename on the shortcut menu. Rename the extension .dll to .old.


Repair Outlook

  1. Click Start, point to Settings and click Control Panel.


  2. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.


  3. In the list of installed programs, click to select either Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Office, depending on how you installed Outlook.


  4. Click Add/Remove.


  5. Once the setup screen appears, click Repair Office.


  6. Click Repair errors in my Office 2000 installation, and then click Finish.


The repair process will take several minutes while Office Setup repairs any damaged or missing files. If prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.

Missing Netscape Navigator File.

Either remove the reference to Netscape Navigator, or copy the Nxpext32.dll file to your \Windows\System folder.

To Remove the Netscape Navigator Reference

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options to open the Options dialog box.


  2. On the Other tab, click Advanced Options.


  3. Click Add-in Manager.


  4. In the Add-in list, click to clear the check box for the Netscape Navigator add-in. This may appear as "Netscape Extensions."


  5. Click OK, OK, and then OK to close all open dialog boxes.



Incorrect Path to the Crext32.dll File.

To correct the path to the Crext32.dll file, follow these steps:
  1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to Crext.ecf, right-click the file, and click Open on the shortcut menu


  2. In the Open With list, click to select either NotePad or WordPad, and then click OK.


  3. Edit the path to point to the correct location of the Crext32.dll file.


NOTE: Use the Find Files Or Folders command on the Start menu to locate the file Crext32.dll.
