OL2000: Spelling Checker Incorrectly Flags Abbreviations in HTML Message

ID: Q223544

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

If you compose an HTML-formatted message and then use the spelling checker, some abbreviations, such as Jr. and Sr., may be incorrectly flagged as misspelled. These same abbreviations are not flagged as misspelled in Plain Text or Rich Text messages.

RESOLUTION

Change the message format from HTML to Plain Text, use the spelling checker, change the format back to HTML, and then re-apply any special formatting. Or, ignore the abbreviation when the spelling checker flags it as misspelled.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem is most noticeable when using the abbreviations Jr. or Sr; the spelling checker does not parse the period with the abbreviation. As a result, the abbreviation is flagged as misspelled. If you use the spelling checker in a Rich Text or Plain Text message, these abbreviations are not flagged as misspelled. The abbreviation and the period are parsed together and recognized as a valid abbreviation.
