OL2000: (CW) Fatal Error Attempting to Link File to Contact from Word

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to link a file to a contact while viewing the contact using the Address Book command in Microsoft Word, you may receive the following error:

Microsoft Windows 95/98

Outlook caused an Invalid Page Fault in Mso9.dll at 015f:3097a383
NOTE: The memory address may vary depending on the information service you use.

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated -- Outlook.exe.
You will not be able to continue in Word without forcing the program to quit. Any unsaved work may be lost. You may then see the following error:
The action could not be completed.
Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft Mail users see the following error prior to the "action could not be completed" error:
The properties dialog could not be displayed.

Microsoft Exchange - 80010105
Internet Mail users may receive the following message initially:
A dialog box is open. Please close it and try again.
This operation cannot be completed; to close the dialog box the Contact form must be dismissed. Subsequent attempts to perform the same operation will result in a similar error.


RESOLUTION

If you want to link a file to a contact, use Outlook rather than through the contact as viewed in Word.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

To link a file to a contact in Outlook, follow these steps:

  1. With the Contact form open, on the Action menu, click Link and then click File.


  2. In Choose a File, click the file you want to link and then click Insert.


  3. A Journal entry is created to record the activity. The link to the file is preserved in the Journal item and also appears on the Activities tab of the contact.
