OL2000: "Reply to All" Keyboard Shortcut Does Not Work After Using Multiple Copy Commands

ID: Q223620

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

If you open a received e-mail message and use the Copy command two or more times, when you press ALT+L to invoke the Reply to All command, nothing happens.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the ALT+L keyboard combination that you use in Outlook to invoke the Reply to All command is also the same keyboard combination you can use in the Clipboard toolbar to invoke the Paste All command.

When you use the Copy command twice in succession in an open Outlook item, the Clipboard toolbar is displayed. When the Clipboard toolbar is active, your attempt to press ALT+L to use the Reply to All command is unsuccessful.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods to invoke the Reply to All command:

  • Press SHIFT+CTRL+R instead of ALT+L.

  • Close the Clipboard toolbar before you press ALT+L.

  • Click Reply to All on the toolbar.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

You can use the Office Clipboard to collect and paste multiple items. The Office Clipboard automatically copies multiple items when you perform any of the following actions:

  • Copy or cut two different items in succession in the same program.

  • Copy one item, paste the item, and then copy another item in the same program.

  • Copy one item twice in succession.

You can click Paste All on the Clipboard toolbar to paste all of the items you copied, or you can click an individual item to paste only that item. The Paste command on the Edit menu pastes only the last item you copied. However, after you paste anything from the Clipboard toolbar (either an individual item or all items), the Paste command (on the Edit menu) pastes the last item pasted from the Clipboard toolbar.

The Office Clipboard is different from the Windows Clipboard. When you copy multiple items to the Office Clipboard, the last item you copy is always copied to the Windows Clipboard. When you clear the Office Clipboard, the Windows Clipboard is also cleared. When you use the Paste command on the Edit menu, the Paste button on the toolbar, or the shortcut keys (CTRL+V), you paste the contents of the Windows Clipboard.
