OL2000: (CW) Error Message "Error Reading Service"

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

When you start Outlook you may receive the following error message:

There was an error reading your '<service name>' Internet e-mail service. Click the Tools menu, click Services, delete the service and then create a new one.


CAUSE

This problem can occur when you copy an Internet E-mail, or Microsoft Mail service from one profile to another profile. When you start Outlook using the destination profile, you receive the error message.


RESOLUTION

Delete the service you copied and then add the service manually to the problem profile. To add a service, start Outlook using the profile you want to add the service to, and on the Tools menu, click Services.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
