OL2000: (CW) Error Message: Creating Folder Rule Causes IPF When Rules Wizard Runs

ID: Q223958

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Folder Assistant to create a rule to return mail sent to a public folder, and then copy the folder design to apply the rule to another folder, you will subsequently receive the following error when you attempt to run the Rules Wizard:

Outlook caused an invalid page fault in module Outllib.dll at 015f:3a49709f
The error generally occurs once you respond to the dialog box asking whether server or client rules are to be kept, but the error may occur before the client/server rules dialog box is displayed.

RESOLUTION

Delete the Folder Assistant rule using the Inbox Assistant.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

IMPORTANT: Outlook 2000 is designed to use the Rules Wizard exclusively. The procedures referenced below are provided as a means to resolve issues with problem rules created previously with the Inbox Assistant. Microsoft does not support the continued use of the Inbox Assistant in a Microsoft Exchange Server environment with Outlook 2000.

The Rules Wizard is on by default in Outlook 2000 and can not be deactivated in the user interface. The following Microsoft Web site outlines a procedure that will allow the user to activate the Inbox Assistant for the purpose of resolving rules problems similar to the one described in the Symptoms section above:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/journ/OutlookRulesWizard.htm

Once you have temporarily invoked the Inbox Assistant, follow these steps to delete the offending rule:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Inbox Assistant.

  2. Click the problem rule and then click Delete Rule.

  3. Click OK and then restart Outlook.

To return to the Rules Wizard functionality, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options and then click the Other tab

  2. Click Advanced Options and then click Add-in Manager.

  3. Click to place a check mark at Rules Wizard.

  4. Click OK, OK and OK to save the change. Restart Outlook to continue using the Rules Wizard.
