OL2000: (CW) Error Message "An unexpected error occurred...(mspst.dll)" When Sending a Fax

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to send a fax, you may get the following error message:

An unexpected error occurred. Could not initialize provider (mspst.dll)


CAUSE

One or more of your Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) program files is the incorrect version. This problem can occur after upgrading your operating system to Microsoft Windows 98.


RESOLUTION

Run the Fixmapi.exe tool to restore your MAPI files.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.


MORE INFORMATION

The Fixmapi.exe tool, included with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Outlook 2000, will detect and aid in resolving conflicts with MAPI files that may affect your ability to send and receive mail and faxes from other programs.
