ID: Q224845

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

If you are using Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor, and your cursor is in the body of the message, pressing CTRL+ENTER inserts a page break in the message rather than initiating a Send message operation.

CAUSE

When you are editing the body of a message using Word as your e-mail editor, key conbinations take on the functions of Word rather than Outlook.

RESOLUTION

Use one of the following workarounds to address this issue:

  • Click the Send button on the toolbar to send a message.

  • Move your cursor to the message header before pressing CTRL+ENTER.

  • Modify the CTRL+ENTER shortcut key combination in Word to initiate the Send operation rather than insert a page break.

  • Do not use Word as your e-mail editor.

  • STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

    MORE INFORMATION

Many people are very accustomed to using shortcut keys rather than the mouse to navigate. The steps below describe how to change CTRL+ENTER to function as Send when using Word as your e-mail editor:

To Modify the CTRL+ENTER Shortcut Keys

    1. On the Word Tools menu, click Customize and then click Keyboard.

    2. In the Categories list, click to select All Commands.

    3. In the Commands list, click to select EmailSend.

    4. Click to place your cursor in the Press new shortcut key window.

    5. Press the CRTL and ENTER keys at the same time, and then click Assign.

    6. Click Close, and Close, and then quit Word.

The CTRL+ENTER shortcut keys will now function as the Send key when using Word as your e-mail editor in Outlook.

NOTE: You must assign a new shortcut key to the Insert Page Break command if you wish to use keystrokes.

To Assign New Shortcut Keys to Insert Page Break.

    1. On the Word Tools menu, click Customize and then click Keyboard.

    2. In the Categories list, click to select Insert.

    3. In the Commands list, click to select InsertPageBreak.

    4. Click to place your cursor in the Press new shortcut key window.

    5. Press the CTRL and SHIFT and ENTER keys at the same time, and then click Assign.

NOTE: You can use any other key combination that is either unassigned or that is assigned to a function that you do not use.
