OL2000: Outlook Express 5 Mail Doesn't Import

ID: Q224866

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you import your Microsoft Outlook Express 5 mail, addresses, and rules, only the addresses are imported. When you select the Outlook Express folder to import from, you receive the following error message:

The mail folder could not be opened. If another application is using this file, please close it and try again.

CAUSE

In the import wizard, you clicked Cancel to Choose Identity, and then chose the Outlook Express folder to import from.

RESOLUTION

Start the import wizard again and choose an Outlook Express Identity.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Identities in Outlook Express are similar to Profiles in Outlook. If you log off of your current Identity and do not log on to another one before closing Outlook Express, Outlook will not know which Identity to import mail from. During the import process you be presented with a list of all the current Identities on the computer. Clicking Cancel indicates that you are importing an Outlook Express 4.0 mail file. You are then asked to browse to the folder containing your mail. If you click to select the Outlook Express folder and click OK, the import appears to proceed normally but only addresses are imported.

To import your mail and rules from Outlook Express, run the import wizard again and select an Identity to import from. Because you have already imported the addresses, you will need to click to clear the Import Address Book check box in the import wizard when asked what you want to import. All of your mail and rules will then properly import from Outlook Express.
