OL2000: Rule Based on Sender Name May Not Work

ID: Q224880

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

A rule that is based on who sent the message may not work as expected. For example, if you create a rule to move messages from people or distribution list to a specified folder, the rule may not work.

CAUSE

Rules based on from people or distribution list do not strictly use the e-mail address; instead, they use the display name in the From field. If you create the rule using a contact that has a different display name than the message, the rule does not work.

RESOLUTION

Create your rule based on the setting with specific words in the sender's address. This condition allows you to use the e-mail address instead of the display name as the rule's criteria.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
