OL2000: (IMO) Error Message: "Unable to logon to server using distributed password authentication..."

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Internet Mail Only option. To determine your installation type, on the Help menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Internet Mail Only" if you have the Internet Mail Only option installed.

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP), you may receive the following error message:

Unable to logon to server using distributed password authentication...


CAUSE

You have Secure Password Authentication turned on and your ISP's server does not require it.


RESOLUTION

Turn off Secure Password Authentication.

To Turn Off Secure Password Authentication

  1. Close Outlook.


  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.


  3. Double-click the Mail, or Mail and Fax icon.


  4. In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click to select your Internet account, and then click Properties.


  5. On the Servers tab, click to clear the Log on using Secure Password Authentication check box.


  6. Click OK and then click Close.


  7. Start Outlook.
