OL2000: Outlook Stops Responding When Using the Quick Find Feature

SYMPTOMS

When using Quick Find on the toolbar or Find a Contact on the Advanced toolbar to find a contact, Outlook may stop responding, or you may receive one of the following error messages:

An application error has occurred. Access violation 0xc0000005
- or -
OUTLOOK caused an invalid page fault in module MSO9.DLL at 015f:308c9dab


CAUSE

You may have a damaged QuickFindMRU registry key.


RESOLUTION

Remove the QuickFindMRU registry key and restart Outlook.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

The information in this key is written as hexadecimal values and is not editable. To fix the problem, follow these steps:

  1. Close all open programs.


  2. On the Start menu, click Run, and type regedit in the Open box.


  3. Navigate to the following registry key:


  4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Contact\QuickFindMRU
  5. Click to select the key, and on the Edit menu, click Delete. When you receive the Confirm Key Delete prompt, click Yes.


  6. Quit the Registry Editor, and start Outlook.


When you restart Outlook, the key is recreated. Your previous Quick Find list is removed and will be rebuilt.
