ID: Q238569

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to add a large number of items to a contact distribution list (DL), you may receive one of the following errors:

This distribution list has reached the maximum size for your network e-mail server.
This distribution list has reached the maximum size for your network e-mail server. Only the first <n> of <n> members have been added.
This distribution list has reached the maximum size for your network e-mail server. No members could be added.
NOTE: The second sentence of the message depends upon how many items were already in the DL and how many you are currently trying to add. The maximum number of contacts is 165. The Maximum number of address book items is 141.

CAUSE

This is a limitation of a Microsoft Exchange Server message store. It only occurs when building a DL in a Exchange Server personal mailbox or an Exchange Server public folder.

RESOLUTION

Create multiple distribution lists, each with no more than the maximum number of items.
