OL2000: (CW) Error Message "The message cannot be secured using the selected Security Setting."

ID: Q238578

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

When attempting to digitally sign an outgoing e-mail message with a VeriSign Digital ID, you may receive the following error:

The message cannot be secured using the selected Security Setting. Your e-mail address may not match the e-mail address on the certificate, or some other problem exists with the certificate.
This error does not occur using Microsoft Outlook Express.

CAUSE

This occurs when you use two or more Internet e-mail accounts. Because the Corporate or Workgroup installation option does not offer the Send Using feature, the wrong e-mail address is associated with the digital ID.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Add the From Field to Messages

To ensure that the correct e-mail address is being used for the digital ID, add and use the From field in your outgoing message.
  1. Create a new e-mail message.

  2. On the View menu, click From Field.

  3. Type the e-mail address you used when you obtained your digital ID in the From field, and type your message.

  4. On the View menu, click Options, click to select the Security options you want. Click Close, and then click Send.

Create Another Profile for the Internet E-mail Address

Create a separate profile for the Internet e-mail address you used when you obtained your digital ID.
  1. Quit Outlook if it is running.

  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.

  3. Double-click the Mail icon (or the Mail and Fax icon), click Show Profiles, and click Add to add a new profile.

  4. Follow the Inbox Setup Wizard to create a new profile using the Internet e-mail address you used when you obtained your digital ID.
