OL2000: MSN Sign-In Screen Hangs and Outlook Stops Responding

SYMPTOMS

When attempting to deliver mail using The Microsoft Network (MSN) on Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, your MSN Sign-In screen may hang, and Outlook may stop responding.


CAUSE

You have Outlook set to dial automatically when checking for new mail, and you have a Microsoft Intellipoint Mouse with a mouse driver prior to version 2.2d.


RESOLUTION

Turn off automatic dialing when checking for new mail.

Install the latest software update for the Microsoft Intellipoint Mouse.

How you turn off automatic dialing when checking for new mail depends on whether you are using Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup (CW), or the Internet Mail Only (IMO) setup option. If you are not sure, on the Help menu, click About Microsoft Outlook. The second line of text describes your setup configuration.

To Turn Off Automatic Dialing

Use the steps appropriate for your installation of Outlook.

Internet Mail Only (IMO)

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.


  2. On the Mail Delivery tab, click to clear the Automatically dial when checking for new messages check box.


  3. Click OK.


Corporate or Workgroup (CW)

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.


  2. On the Internet E-mail tab, click to clear the Automatically dial when checking for new messages check box.


  3. Click OK.
