OL2000: Error Message "Outlook Executed an Invalid Instruction in Module Unknown at <memory address>"

SYMPTOMS

When you quit Outlook, you may receive the following error message:

Outlook executed an invalid instruction in module unknown at <memory address>.


CAUSE

The Outcmd.dat file may be corrupted.


RESOLUTION

Rename the Outcmd.dat file to Outcmd.old and restart Outlook. The Outcmd.dat file stores toolbar and menu settings. If the file is not available when Outlook starts, the file is rebuilt using the default settings.


MORE INFORMATION

To rename Outcmd.dat:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and click Files or Folders.


  2. Type outcmd.dat in the Named box, click to select My Computer in the Look In list, click to select the Include Subfolders check box, and then click Find Now.


  3. Right-click the outcmd.dat icon in the search results window and click Rename.


  4. Click your insertion point immediately to the right of the "t" of the file name and press BACKSPACE three times.


  5. Type old and press ENTER.


  6. On the File menu, click Close.
