OL2000: Some Languages in MultiLanguage Pack not Supported

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack compact discs, the only languages that work with Outlook are French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Brazilian Portuguese, Danish, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch, Iberian Portuguese, Finnish and Basque. Other Office 2000 programs, such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Access, work correctly with all languages.

CAUSE

Outlook only supports languages within the operating system's current code page. For the United States (US) version of Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98, this limits the languages that can be supported in Outlook.

RESOLUTION

Use the corresponding language version of Windows.

Previous versions of Office are localized to work with different languages, so there is a separate version of Office for each language. Office 2000 combines support for all languages into a single product. Office 2000 with MultiLanguage Pack is built on core code that you can run internationally. Language-specific features are stored separately, primarily in dynamic-link library (.dll) files. These features work cooperatively with the core Office 2000 code, so you can install and run these features when needed.

This plug-in language capability means you can install Office with the MultiLanguage Pack and view the Office user interface and online Help in German, or view Help in German while displaying the user interface in English.

The MultiLanguage Pack and Office 2000 are installed from different CDs and the MultiLanguage Pack has its own setup program.

The Global Input Method Editors (IME) allow users running non-Asian versions of Windows to type Asian text in Word, Outlook, and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
