OL98: Error Message When Checking Spelling in Microsoft Outlook

SYMPTOMS

If you use the spelling checker in Outlook, you may receive the following error message:

Error occurred while checking spelling. The shared Spelling component is configured incorrectly. Please run setup again.

CAUSE

Outlook uses a registry key value to determine which spelling checker files to use. The Speller value identifies the language. For English versions, this value should be 1033\Normal.

RESOLUTION

If the Speller value is missing, or contains an incorrect data value, the spelling checker does not work.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To create or edit this registry value:

1. Click Start, and click Run.



2. In the Open box, type regedit and click OK.



3. Navigate to the following registry key:




HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Options\Spelling

4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value. Type Speller to name the value, and then click Enter. Double-click the new Value, type the Value data, and then click OK.

5. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
