OL2000: Error Message When Attempting to Start Mail Merge in Outlook

ID: Q252149

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start a mail merge in Outlook, you may receive the following error message:

The operation failed due to network or other communication problems. Check your connections and try again.

If you click New Letter to Contact on the Actions menu while using the Letter Wizard, you may receive the following error message:
Unable to start Letter Wizard.

CAUSE

These behaviors may occur if Norton Antivirus 2000 is installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, unregister the Norton AntiVirus Officeav.dll add-in:

  1. On the Start menu, click Run.

  2. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK:

  3. regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"
If the command is successful, you see the message:
DllUnregisterServer in C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\OfficeAV.dll succeeded.
If the command is unsuccessful, search the hard drive for the file; it is possible that the file is located in a different folder.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem occurs when you use Microsoft Office 2000 and Norton AntiVirus version 2000 v.6.0.

The resolution described earlier disables the virus scanning plug-in that is installed during Norton AntiVirus 2000 setup. This plug-in functions to scan documents for macro virus infections in Office products. When this plug-in is disabled, Norton AntiVirus does not scan documents that are opened.

The Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect feature still provides ongoing protection by scanning any file that is run, downloaded, opened, created, or deleted.
