ID: Q252399

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to send a mail message with Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor, you may receive the following error message:

The operation failed due to network or other communication problems. Check your connections and try again.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the Normal.dot file is damaged or corrupted. This can occur if you recently had the Happy99 virus and successfully removed it.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, close Outlook, find and rename the Normal.dot file. This will remove any saved macros and customized settings in Word.

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

  2. In the Named box, type Normal.dot, click My computer in the Look in list, and click to select the Include subfolders check box.

  3. Right-click the Normal.dot file in the list of found files, and then click Rename.

  4. Rename the file Normal.old.

  5. Restart Outlook.

This rebuilds the Normal.dot file used by Outlook and Word.

MORE INFORMATION

Normal.dot is a Word template that will regenerate itself if deleted. It provides the basic template information for the Outlook form when used as the e-mail editor.

Happy99.exe is a 32-bit Windows-based Trojan horse program. When you run this program, it displays fireworks on the screen. It also creates two files named Ska.exe and Ska.dll, copies your original Wsock32.dll file to Wsock32.ska, and modifies the Wsock32.dll file.
