IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. SYMPTOMS

When you try to print or define a print style in Microsoft Outlook 98, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Unable to save the printer settings. Make sure the file c:\windows\outlprnt is not missing or write protected.
-or-
Error c:\windows\outlprnt is missing.
-or-
Out of Resources.
-or-
Out of memory or system resources. Close some windows and try again.

CAUSE

These messages may occur with certain virus protection programs that do not allow file creation in the Windows folder or prevent writing to .ini files.

RESOLUTION

You can modify the reference to the Outlprnt file in the registry so that the file contains a registered file extension.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To modify the reference to the Outlprnt file in the registry, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click "Exit and Log Off" to quit Outlook.

  2. Click the Start button, and point to Run. In the Open box, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks), and click OK to run the Windows Registry Editor.

  3. Move to and click to select the following key:

    Hkey_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/Office/8.0/Outlook/Printing

  4. The Data value for the Print Settings File is a path that ends with the file name OutlPrnt. Make a note of this file and path name and click to select "Print Settings File."

  5. On the Edit menu, click Modify. In the Value data box, change the file name to OutlPrnt.doc, and click OK.

  6. On the Registry menu, click Exit to close the Registry Editor.

  7. Using Word 97, create the Outlprnt.doc file at the path location specified in the Windows Registry. You may have to type an X or other data into the file so that it is not empty.

  8. Start Outlook and on the File menu, point to Page Setup, and click Define Print Styles.

  9. Retry the print procedure that caused the original error. You may have to run the print procedure twice to regenerate the correct OutlPrnt.doc data.

If adding the extension .doc to the file does not solve the problem, try changing the path of the file to something different, such as C:\OUTLPRNT.DOC and try the above steps again.
