OL98: Cannot Edit a URL When Composing a Mail Message

ID: Q179680

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 98

SYMPTOMS

After you type a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) into a new mail message, you cannot edit the URL by placing the pointer on the URL and clicking; this action activates the hyperlink.

CAUSE

Microsoft Outlook resolves the URL address to a hyperlink immediately when you have typed the protocol portion of the URL, such as http://, ftp://, file://, news://, gopher://, https://, nntp://, prospero://, telnet://, or wais://. If you click a resolved URL, Outlook tries to activate the hyperlink.

This behavior is by design.

RESOLUTION

Use the ARROW keys to move the insertion point into the text of the URL instead of clicking the URL with the mouse. After the insertion point is within the URL text, you can edit it as needed.

-or-

Hover over the spot where you want to edit the hyperlink until the mouse pointer icon becomes a hand, hold down the CTRL key, and click the left mouse button. You can then edit the URL.

-or-

If you use Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor, you can use the right mouse button to click the URL, and then click Update Field on the shortcut menu. You can then edit the URL.
