SUMMARY

This article describes how to create or open a new default Personal Folder for an Internet Only (IMO) mail account.

MORE INFORMATION

If your Personal Folder file is moved, renamed, or becomes damaged, you need to point to its new location or create a new one. Microsoft Outlook (Internet Mail Only) prompts you during startup if the Personal Folder cannot be found or its file name is not recognized.

Create a New Personal Folder

To create a new Personal Folder, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Find, and click Files Or Folders.

  2. In the Named box, type "*.pst" (without the quotation marks). In the Look In list, select My Computer. Click Find Now.

The folder may have a name like: Outlook.pst, mailbox.pst, or <username>.pst.

  3. Right-click the Personal Folder and click Rename on the shortcut menu. Type a new file name and then press ENTER.

  4. Close the Find All Files dialog box.

Create or Open a New Personal Folder

Method 1

  1. Start Outlook. If you receive a message stating that your Personal Folder could not be found, click OK.

  2. Type a name for the file if you need to create a new one, or locate the folder where the new Personal Folder is, click it and then click Open.

Method 2

  1. On the File menu, point to New, and click Personal Folders File (.pst).

  2. Type the name of the new Personal Folder. Verify and change the file location if necessary. Click Create.

NOTE: Do not use the name mailbox.pst.

  3. Verify and change the information if necessary, and then click OK.

  4. If the Folder List does not appear, click Folder List on the View menu.

  5. Right-click the new Personal Folders, click "Properties for <Personal Folders>," and click "Deliver POP mail to this personal folders file," and click OK.

  6. On the File menu, click Exit. Restart Outlook.

  7. In the Folder List, right-click the Personal Folders not associated with Outlook Today, click Properties, click Advanced, and verify that the path of this file is different than the one you created in step 2. Click OK twice.

  8. In the Folder List, right-click the Personal Folders not associated with Outlook Today, and click Close "Personal Folders Name."

NOTE: This closes the connection between Outlook and the folder. It does not delete it.

Method 3

If you are unable to start Outlook, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Find, and click Files Or Folders.

  2. In the Named box, type "*.pst" (without the quotation marks). In the Look In list, click My Computer. Click Find Now.

  3. Click the file, and change the file name extension to .psx by clicking Rename on the File menu. Repeat this for each file found, and close the Find Files dialog box.

  4. Start Outlook. Click OK when you receive the following message:

  5. The file <filename>.pst could not be found
  6. Type a name for the new Personal Folder file, and click OK.

  7. When you receive the message which tells you the location messages are delivered has changed, click Yes.

To Import Items from an Old Personal Folders file into the New File

After you have created the new .pst file, you may want to move items from the old .pst into the new one. To move these items to the new .pst, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click Import And Export.

  2. In the list of options, click "Import from another program or file," and then click Next.

  3. In the list of file types, click Personal Folder File(.pst) and then click Next.

  4. In the File To Import box, type the full path and file name of the .pst file to be imported, and then click Next.

  5. In the "Select the folder to import from" list, click to select the folder to be imported, and then specify the destination for the folder.

If you created the new Personal Folders file because of a problem with the old one, you should use care in importing items from the old file into the new file. Import only those items necessary; otherwise, you may also import corrupted items. For example, you do not need to import the Outbox, and you may not need to import Notes or Journal items. You may need to run the Import Export utility multiple times to get everything you need without importing any folders that are not necessary.
