OL98: Cannot Add Characters to E-mail Name After It Is Resolved

ID: Q179991

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 98

SYMPTOMS

When you try to correct an e-mail name in the To field by adding a missing character to the end of the name, the trailing character is sometimes treated as a separate name. This action results in two incorrect e-mail names, neither of which Microsoft Outlook can resolve properly.

RESOLUTION

To append a character to the end of an incorrect e-mail name, highlight the entire name, and then type the correct name over the erroneous name. Do not try to add characters to the end of the name after the name resolution has failed.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Open a new e-mail message using either WordMail or the Outlook mail editor.

  2. In the To field, type an incorrect e-mail name.

  3. Press TAB to move to the next field and wait for Outlook to resolve the e-mail name. You should see a red, wavy underline, indicating that the name is unresolved.

  4. Press SHIFT+TAB to return to the To field, and then append a character to the end of the name to make it a correct e-mail name.

  5. Press TAB to move to the next field. Note that Outlook places a semi- colon (;) between the name and the last character, and then tries to resolve them as two separate names, neither of which are correct.
