OL98: Why Outlook May Continue to Run After Exit

SUMMARY

This article lists circumstances under which Microsoft Outlook 98 remains loaded in computer memory and continues to run after you quit Outlook.

Outlook may continue to run under the following circumstances:

  • You have an Outlook item open, such as an e-mail message that is minimized.


  • A Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) or a Visual Basic (VB) program is making calls to the Outlook Object Model.


  • You are running an Office program which is attempting to write to the Outlook Journal.


After you quit Outlook, you can use the following steps to determine if Outlook is still running:

Windows 95

  1. Press CTL+ALT+DEL to open the Windows 95 Close Program dialog box.


  2. Check the list of programs for any reference to Outlook, such as "Inbox - Microsoft Outlook."


Windows NT

  1. Press CTL+ALT+DEL to open the Windows NT Security dialog box.


  2. In Windows NT Security, click Task Manager.


  3. In the Windows NT Task Manager, click the Processes tab.


  4. Check the list of Processes for any reference to OUTLOOK.EXE.
