OL98: Import/Export Error: "Translators are not installed."

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When attempting to import or export files with Microsoft Outlook 98, you may receive the following error message:

The <application or file type> translators are not installed. To add them, go to the Windows Control Panel, choose "Add/Remove Programs", then select Outlook 98.


CAUSE

The necessary translator files or database converters are not available because Outlook did not install them during setup.


RESOLUTION

Install the appropriate Personal Information Manager (PIM) program translators or address book translators from the Outlook Add New Components page.

Download the appropriate Microsoft Open DataBase Connectivity (ODBC) drivers from the Microsoft Software Library.

-or-

On the Help menu, point to Microsoft on the Web and click Free Stuff. On the Outlook Enhancements page, click Microsoft Data Access Pack, read the installation instructions, and then click Download Now.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 98.

Install the Converter Files

To install the converter files for these products,

  • ACT!, vers. 2.0, 3.0
  • ECCO 2.0, 3.0, 4.0
  • Personal Address Book
  • Schedule+, vers. 1.0, 7.0
  • Sidekick, vers. 95, 2.0
  • Lotus Organizer, vers. 1.0, 1.1, 2.1, 97
follow these steps:

  1. Quit Outlook.


  2. Click the Start button, point to Settings and click Control Panel. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  3. Click to select Microsoft Outlook 98 from the list, and then click Add/Remove.


  4. Click Add New Components.


  5. Click to select the appropriate installation source.


  6. Click Yes to allow Setup to determine what components are installed on your computer.


  7. Under Import/Export components, click to select the appropriate converters, click Next, and then click Install Now.


  8. If asked to restart Windows, click Yes.


Install the ODBC Drivers

To install ODBC drivers for these products:

  • dBase
  • Microsoft Access
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft FoxPro
copy the self-extracting file, Dataacc.exe, from the ValuPack on your Outlook 98 CD or download GE1263.exe, a self-extracting file, from the Microsoft Software Library. After you copy or download the self-extracting file to your computer, double-click it to install the ODBC drivers.
