The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 98

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS

When opening or creating a new Journal entry in Microsoft Outlook 98, you may receive the following error message:

Out of Memory or System Resources. Close some windows or programs and try again.
- or -
Can't open this item. Out of memory or system resources. Close some windows or programs and try again.

CAUSE

This may be caused by a missing value in the system registry.

MORE INFORMATION

There are several registry entries in Outlook that control the different types of items that are journalized such as E-mail Message, Phone Call, or Microsoft Access.

Each of these items referenced under the key should have a "Description" value where the value data is equal to the key name. For example, the Microsoft Access key will have a value of "Description" and it's value data is Microsoft Access.

If the "Description" value data is set to null, you may experience "Out of Memory or System Resources" errors when creating or opening journal entries.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

Edit the Registry

  1. Click Start, and then click Run. Type regedit, and then click OK.

  2. Navigate to the following sub-key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Outlook\Journaling

  3. Under the Journaling key are subfolders representing items that can be journalized in Outlook. By clicking to select these folders, in the right pane you can see the information required for the journal entries. If the description is null (""), the error message will be displayed when attempting to journal that item type.

  4. In the right pane, double-click Description to open the Edit String dialog box.

  5. Type the name of the program associated with this key in the Value Data box. For example, if the name of the key is Microsoft Access, type, Microsoft Access in the Value data box and click OK.

  6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for any other keys that are missing description strings.

  7. Exit the registry editor.

Manually Adding Strings to a Key

In searching the Journaling Key for valid entries you may find that the Description value is missing. In such cases it is necessary to manually add the value. To manually add these values follow these steps.

  1. Right-click the string value for which you wish to add the value. Click New and then String Value.

  2. Type Description and then press <ENTER>

  3. Double-click the new entry and in the Value Data box type the new string data. Click OK.

For example, if you find that the Microsoft Access key is missing the Description value, right-click Microsoft Access and click New and then String Value. Type Description. Double-click the new value and in Value Data type Microsoft Access. The Value Date will autmatically be inserted within quotes.

NOTE: If you used Access with Microsoft Office 95 and later installed Microsoft Office 97 Small Business Edition or Microsoft Office 97 Standard, Access will appear in the Registry with no description. To prevent the error from happening, delete the Access key under the following path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Outlook\Journaling
