OL98: (CW) Err Msg: The Operation Failed Due To a Registry . . .

ID: Q191065

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 98

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate Workgroup/Other option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate" if you have the Corporate Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Outlook, when trying to empty the Deleted Items folder, you may receive the following error message:

The operation failed due to a registry or installation problem. Restart Outlook and try again. If the problem persists, please reinstall.

RESOLUTION

Running the Inbox Repair tool may or may not remedy the problem, even though it may find errors and report that they have been fixed.

Another method to fix this is to create a new personal folder, remove the old personal folder from the mail profile, and then import the old personal folder into the new one.

NOTE: Importing the old personal folder into the new personal folder may import the damaged information and thus recreate the error situation in the new personal folder. If you know the folder (in this case the Deleted Items folder) is causing the problem, Import everything except the folder containing the damaged items.

MORE INFORMATION

This error message can be caused by damaged e-mail messages stuck in the Deleted Items folder.

To Create a New Personal Folder

Quit Outlook and then follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then double-click the Mail, or Mail and Fax icon.

  2. Click to select Personal Folders, and then click Properties.

  3. Note the Path and file name of the Personal Folder, and then click Cancel.

  4. With the Personal Folder still selected, click Remove. This does not delete the file from your computer; it only removes it from the mail profile.

  5. Click Add. Click to select Personal Folders and then click OK.

  6. Type a name for your new personal folder and then click Open. Click OK to accept the default settings for the new personal folder and then click OK to close the Properties window.

Start Outlook. There will be nothing in any of the folders and you may receive a message stating that the location where messages are delivered has changed. Click Yes if you receive this message.

Import the Old Personal Folder

  1. On the File menu, click Import and Export.

  2. Click to select "Import from another program or file." Click Next.

  3. Click to select Personal Folder File (.pst), and then click Next.

  4. Click the Browse button, and locate the old Personal Folder noted in the section above. Click to select the Personal folder and then click Open. Click Next.

  5. In "Select the folder to import from", click Personal Folders, and then click Finish. By default Outlook will import into the same folders as before, including creating new folders if they do not exist.

NOTE: If you know which folder in the old personal folder contains the damaged item, import all but that folder. You will need to repeat step 5 for every folder except the top level personal folder and the one containing the damaged item.

Your mail items are now in your new Personal Folder.
