OL98: HTML Formatted E-mail Messages Show HTML Tags

ID: Q193554

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 98

SUMMARY

When you use Microsoft Outlook 98 to open an e-mail message that is formatted as HTML, you may see the HTML tags instead of the formatted text and graphics.

MORE INFORMATION

Sometimes when HTML-formatted e-mail is sent from mailing lists, the originating server does not include the correct META tags. Under this circumstance Outlook cannot correctly display the message.

The correct META tags, above and within the heading of an HTML formatted e- mail message, should look similar to the following:

<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type"CONTENT="text/html;
   charset=iso-8859-1"><!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD W3 HTML//EN">
   <HTML>
   <HEAD>
   <META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
If there is text above these tags or if the META tags are missing, you may see HTML tags instead of the properly formatted message. You cannot correct this problem using Outlook.
