SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Outlook 98, the date for Memorial Day, 1999, is incorrectly listed as May 24, 1999, instead of May 31, 1999.

CAUSE

The Outlook.txt file has the incorrect day for this holiday.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, use the appropriate method for your situation.

To Correct the Date Before Adding Holidays

If the United States holidays have not been added to the Outlook Calendar, edit the Outlook.txt file to correct the date, and then re-import the United States holidays. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and click Files And Folders.

  2. In the Named box, type Outlook.txt. Ensure that the Look In box has the entire hard disk selected and then click Find Now.

  3. Double-click the Outlook.txt file in the list of found files. If you receive a message that the file is too large for Notepad, click Yes to open the file in WordPad. Otherwise allow the file to open in Notepad.

  4. Scroll down to the [United States] section and change "Memorial Day, 1999/05/24" to "Memorial Day, 1999/05/31" (without the quotation marks).

  5. On the File menu, click Save As and save the file as a text-only document.

  6. On the File menu, click Exit to close Notepad or WordPad.

To import the corrected holiday list, follow these steps:

  1. Start Outlook.

  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.

  3. On the Preferences tab, click Calendar Options.

  4. Under Calendar Options, click Add Holidays and click to select the United States check box.

  5. Click OK three times to close all dialogs.

To Correct the Date After Adding Holidays

If you have added the United States holidays to the Outlook Calendar, follow these steps to adjust the incorrect date:

  1. Click the Calendar folder for which you want to adjust the holiday.

  2. Navigate to May 24, 1999.

  3. Double-click the Memorial Day all-day appointment to open it.

  4. Change both the Start Time and End Time to 5/31/99, and click the Save And Close button on the toolbar.
