ID: Q198003

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 98

SUMMARY

The default groups on the Outlook Bar are in a specific order (that is, Outlook Shortcuts, My Shortcuts, and Other Shortcuts). This article describes how to change the order of these items on the Outlook bar.

MORE INFORMATION

To change the order in which the groups (Outlook Shortcuts, My Shortcuts, Other Shortcuts) appear on the Outlook Bar, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Exit And Log Off.

  2. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.

  3. In the Named box, type "*.fav" (without quotation marks), and then click Find Now. A file or a list of files with the extension .fav will be listed.

  4. Right-click the .fav file whose name is the same as your mail profile, and click Rename. Give it a new name.

  5. In the Named box, type "Outlbar.inf" (without quotation marks), and then click Find now. Right-click the file, and then click Edit to open it.

  6. Look for the following section, about 1/4 way down in the file:

         [DefaultOutlookBar]
         AddGroup=OutlookGroup,MailGroup,OtherGroup

  7. Change the AddGroup entry order to the order you want. For instance if you want the MailGroup (My Shortcuts) to be on top, make the entry look like this:

    AddGroup=MailGroup,OutlookGroup,OtherGroup

  8. On the File menu, click Save. Close the editor.

  9. Restart Outlook. Outlook will look at the .inf file to build the .fav file and rearrange the order of the groups on the Outlook Bar. You will see a message asking you to wait while Outlook rebuilds the Outlook bar.
