OL98: (CW) Rule to Forward Messages Does Not Save Copy In Sent Items Folder

ID: Q247835

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 98

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation.

SUMMARY

When you create a Rules Wizard rule that automatically forwards messages or replies, the message does not appear in the Sent Items folder. There no indication that the message was forwarded; however, the the message is forwarded according to the rule.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior is because the rule is processed on the Microsoft Exchange Server computer. The delivery point for your incoming mail does not effect this behavior; delivery to the server mailbox, or to a local personal folders file produces the same behavior. Outlook used with the Internet Mail Only setup option does save a copy in the Sent Items folder.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. In Outlook (CW) with Exchange Server in the profile, on the Tools menu, click Rules Wizard.

  2. Create the following rule:

  3. Check messages when they arrive
with specific words in the subject (My Test)
forward to people or distribution list (enter an e-mail name)
    no exceptions
  4. Have someone send you a message with My Test in the subject line.

When received, the item will be forwarded to the e-mail name in the rule, but the forwarded message will not be stored in the Sent Items folder.

NOTE: The same behavior will occur if you select reply using a specific template.
