OL97: Attachment Does Not Copy Using Drag-and-Drop Feature

ID: Q161302

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 97

SYMPTOMS

When you use the drag-and-drop feature to copy a Microsoft Outlook 97 item from one folder to another, attachments are not copied if the folders are of different types.

CAUSE

If you drag an item between the same type folders, Outlook moves the item and all of its attachments to the destination folder.

If you drag an item between different type folders, Outlook copies the item rather than moving it. The way Outlook copies the item depends on the type of item and folders. By default, Outlook conserves disk space by not including attachments when you drag items between folders of different types.

For example, if you drag an e-mail message that includes an attachment from a Mail folder to a Calendar folder, Outlook creates a new Calendar Appointment containing the e-mail text without attachments. On the other hand, if you drag an e-mail message that includes an attachment from a Mail folder to a Journal folder, Outlook creates a new Journal entry with a shortcut to the original e-mail message. Some folder types, such as Notes, cannot include attachments.

WORKAROUND

To gain more control, use the right mouse button to drag items between folders. When you release the right mouse button on the destination folder, a shortcut menu appears displaying the available Copy and Move options. If the destination folder is capable of storing the attachment, you can select an option to copy or to move with attachment.
