OL97: Roaming User's AutoSignature Incorrect or Missing

ID: Q175047

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook, versions 97, 8.01, 8.02

SYMPTOMS

When you configure Microsoft Outlook 97 as a roaming user and you log on to a different workstation, when the AutoSignature is inserted into your e- mail message, it may not be correct, or it may be blank.

CAUSE

This may be caused by either of the following:

  • Two or more users have the same profile name.

  • The AutoSignature file (*.rtf) does not match the Profile name.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 97 versions 8.01 and 8.02. The problem was corrected in Outlook 8.03.

MORE INFORMATION

You can use AutoSignature to automatically add text to mail messages you send. For example, you can create an AutoSignature that includes your name, job title, and phone number. You can also use AutoSignature to add a custom heading to your messages or to include a standard paragraph about how you want others to respond to your messages. You can change the font and alignment of the AutoSignature to give your signature a unique appearance and use different formats for individual characters or words in the signature.

The AutoSignature is kept in a file named <ProfileName>.rtf, where <ProfileName> is the name of the profile you use. The default location for this file is the Windows folder. Outlook users configured as roaming users specify the location of the AutoSignature file by using a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path in the Registry. For example:

   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Office\
   Explorer\Favorites
