SYMPTOMSIf you use the Outlook Integrated File Management (IFM) to open Office documents located on shared network drives, you may receive the following error if you save the files to the remote server location where <program> is the program that is being used to open the remote document. The network path to the saved file is listed immediately after the error message. Office documents that are opened and saved in this manner are subsequently damaged. The error condition will occur with all programs in the Office 97 suite. RESOLUTIONTo avoid this error and damage to your Office documents, avoid opening and saving such files using IFM. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed

IFM is a feature which allows you to access to the file system on your computer, including any mapped network drives, from within Outlook. This feature is available on the Other Shortcuts tab of the Outlook Bar. Multiple Saves in One Editing SessionIf you open a document using IFM, make changes, and save the file while it is open, you will usually receive the error after you save the file a second time.Saving Files After Opening and Closing from the Same LocationIf you open a file, make changes, and then close the file, you will receive the error after you perform the same action on the second or third attempt.As described in the "Symptoms" section, once the error occurs, the Office document is damaged. After the error, a temporary file will remain in the folder where the original file was located. This temporary file will not contain any recognizable information from the original file.
