PPT2000: "This Action Cannot Be Completed" Error When You Insert Multiple Clips into a Slide

ID: Q218535

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you insert multiple clips from the Clip Gallery into a slide, you may receive the following error message:

This action cannot be completed because the Microsoft PowerPoint "[your presentation]" program is busy. Click the appropriate button on the task bar to activate the program and correct the problem.
If you click Retry, the above message is repeated.

If you click Cancel, you may receive the following error message:
An unspecified error has occurred. Clip Gallery could not complete the operation. For more information, press F1 now and see Troubleshooting in Clip Gallery Help.
Error code 0X80010001

CAUSE

The problem occurs when you use Clip Gallery to insert more than one movie or sound clip into a slide. After inserting a movie or sound clip, the Insert Sound dialog box may not be minimized to reveal the Microsoft PowerPoint message box asking:

Do you want your sound to play automatically in the slide show? If not, it will play when you click it.
The PowerPoint program remains busy until you respond to the hidden message. If you attempt to insert a second sound or movie clip before answering the message box, you receive the error messages described in the "Symptoms" section.

NOTE: This problem does not occur if the first sound selection is a .wav file or the first movie clip is an .avi file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, always respond to the PowerPoint message box after inserting each Clip Gallery clip. If the PowerPoint message box is not visible, minimize Clip Gallery to view the message box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
