ERROR MESSAGE

When you add a bookmark reference to a hyperlink by clicking Bookmark in the Insert Hyperlink or Edit Hyperlink dialog boxes, you receive the following error message:

Microsoft PowerPoint could not open this file or could not parse a file of this type.

CAUSE

PowerPoint can only access slide bookmark references from PowerPoint presentations or from HTML pages with the Bookmark button.

It cannot extract this information from documents created by other applications, including other Office 2000 programs.

Web Pages created by these two programs can have their bookmarks referenced by PowerPoint hyperlinks.


WHAT TO TRY

Manually Append the Bookmark Reference

While you cannot directly access the bookmark reference from another document, you can manually type in the #Bookmark_name at the end of the hyperlink. Bookmark_name refers to the name assigned to the bookmark flag.

To find the name of a Word 2000 bookmark, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Word 2000, and open the document you want to hyperlink to.


  2. On the Insert menu, click Bookmark.


  3. Scroll through the list of bookmarks for that document until you find the one you want to link to. Make a note of the name.


  4. Click Cancel.


  5. In PowerPoint 2000, select the text or object you want to assign a hyperlink to.


  6. On the Insert menu, click Hyperlink.


  7. On the Insert Hyperlink or Edit Hyperlink dialog box, click File, and browse for the Word 2000 document.


  8. After you locate the document, the path and file name will appear in the "Type the file or Web page name" box.


  9. At the end of the path and file name, type the bookmark name in the following format:

    Path\File_name#Bookmark_name

    Where Path is a hard drive or Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path, File_name is the name of the file you are linking to, and Bookmark_name refers to the name assigned to the bookmark flag.


  10. Click OK.
