PPT2000: Error Message: "The audio compression codec requested was not installed"

ERROR MESSAGE

If you start an Online Broadcast from the SlideShow menu, point to Online Broadcast, then click Begin broadcast, you may see the following message:

Connecting to Netshow Encoder. Creating a new instance of the Netshow Encoder.
Next, you may receive the following error message:
Failed to connect to Netshow Encoder. Press Retry to try again.
When you click Details, you may receive the following messages:
Microsoft PowerPoint

Please see your system administrator. The following error message was returned from the NetShow Encoder: The audio Compression codec requested was not installed.
When you click Retry, you will receive the first error message listed. NOTE: Microsoft Office 2000 has built-in functionality that allows you to get more information about difficult-to-troubleshoot alerts or error messages. CAUSE

The audio compression codecs on your computer may have missing or inaccurate information in the registry, or they may not be listed properly in the System.ini.


WHAT TO TRY

Make sure that the codecs installed by Office 2000 have been installed and registered properly. To do this, use one of the following methods.

Repair Office 2000

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, please consult your product documentation to complete these steps.

Steps to Repair Office 2000
  1. Close all programs that are open.


  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  3. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.


  4. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click your Microsoft Office 2000 installation, and then click Add/Remove.


  5. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Repair Office.


  6. In the Reinstall/Repair Microsoft Office 2000 dialog box, click to select Repair errors in my Office installation, and then click Finish.


  7. When the Office Repair is finished, you may be prompted to restart Windows. If you are, click Yes and let Windows restart.


Install Windows Media Tools

If Detect and Repair has not resolved the problem, install Windows Media Tools, (formerly known as Netshow Tools). The Windows Media tools (or NetShow Tools) should be installed on the system which is performing the encoding (which may not be the same machine running NetShow services). The Windows NT Server 4.0 must have Service Pack 3 or Service Pack 4 installed.
  1. If you already have Windows Media Tools or NetShow Tools installed, you must first uninstall them. Otherwise skip to step six.


  2. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.


  3. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  4. Click to select Windows Media Tools or NetShow Tools from the list, and then click Add/Remove


  5. When you are prompted, choose to uninstall the current installation of the tools.


  6. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.


  7. In the Open box, type the following URL:

    http://download.microsoft.com/msdownload/wmedia/wmt4.0/x86/en/wmtools.exe

    Choose to save the file on to your computer.


  8. Navigate to where you saved the wmtool.exe, and double-click the file.


  9. Read the End-User License Agreement, and click Yes to accept the license agreement.


  10. On the Welcome dialog box, click Next.


  11. Click Complete Installation, then click Next.


  12. You may specify the location for the Windows Media Tools, then click Finish.


  13. If you are prompted to create the location, click Yes.


Windows Media Tools will now be installed on the server.

Modify the System.ini

If the issue is still unresolved, add the following lines to the [drivers32] section of the System.ini file:


msacm.sl_anet=sl_anet.acm
msacm.voxacm160=vct3216.acm
  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.


  2. In the Open box, type Sysedit to display the System Configuration Editor.


  3. Click the System.ini tab, scroll to the [drivers32] section, and then find the following lines of information: 
    
msacm.sl_anet=sl_anet.acm
msacm.voxacm160=vct3216.acm

    NOTE: If either of these lines are missing, type the line as shown.


  4. On the File menu, click Save, and then close the System Configuration Editor.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000.

A codec is an algorithm or scheme used when recording digital audio or video. Codec actually stands for Compressor/Decompressor. A codec is used, for example, when audio is transmitted over the internet; the audio is compressed on the sending machine, and decompressed on the receiving machine.
