PPT2000: Formatting Changes When Opening HTML Generated Outside of PowerPoint

ID: Q226599

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000

SYMPTOMS

If you open a web page in Microsoft PowerPoint, the formatting may appear differently than it does in Microsoft Internet Explorer or other types of Web browsers.

The following list specifies some differences you may notice when importing HTML into PowerPoint.

  • Page size may change, and information may be displayed off of the slide.

  • Table layout may change, including column positioning and spacing.

  • Object and text colors may change or may be lost.

  • Text size, margins, layout, and spacing may change.

  • Objects may overlap.

  • Objects, Active X components, and script that cannot be displayed or interpreted by PowerPoint may be discarded.

CAUSE

HTML that was not generated inside Microsoft PowerPoint, or PowerPoint HTML that has been edited in another application may be reformatted when imported into Microsoft PowerPoint for editing. For PowerPoint to successfully save presentations in HTML format and open them back up again, it must interpret HTML code in a specific way, and insert page formatting information not necessary in other HTML documents. If an HTML document contains code that PowerPoint cannot interpret, that code will be discarded.

This designed behavior may affect the layout of HTML documents generated by other applications, including other Microsoft Office applications.

RESOLUTION

Once the HTML document has been imported, it must be manually reformatted inside Microsoft PowerPoint.

Alternatively, other HTML editors may open these HTML documents differently. Microsoft FrontPage or Microsoft Word may be better suited to opening documents that do not appear correctly in Microsoft PowerPoint.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000.
